GOVERNMENT SCIENCE SECONDARY SCHOOL, GUSAU

 HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

In a concerted effort by the former Northern Regional Government to provide secondary education for the emerging post-independence youth of this part of the country, the Government established Government Secondary School Kotorkoshi in 1967.

The school was initially housed temporarily at Kotorkoshi Senior Boarding Primary School, which at the time possessed buildings and other basic infrastructure necessary for the hitch-free take-off of a conventional secondary school. At this stage, the secondary school coexisted with the Kotorkoshi Senior Boarding Primary School, which was later phased out.

The school commenced academic activities in May 1967 with a student population of 36, under the leadership of Mr. M. D. A. Olorunmonu, the pioneer Principal. The school remained in Kotorkoshi until 1971, when it was relocated to its present site at Gada Biyu, along Sokoto Road, Gusau, following the completion of essential infrastructure, particularly classrooms, laboratories, a dining hall, and students’ hostels.

Following the transfer of political power from military to civilian rule on 1st October 1979, several reforms were introduced by the Government of Late Alhaji Shehu Kangiwa. These reforms led to the establishment of more boarding schools in the former Sokoto State and the creation of the Science and Technical Education Board, which subsequently converted Government Secondary School Gusau into Government Science Secondary School Gusau.

In line with the academic excellence envisioned for the school, admission was restricted to students who sat for and passed a Special Science Examination. Consequently, Government Science Secondary School Gusau has lived up to the dreams and expectations of its founders, producing students who have excelled in various spheres of national life and human endeavour.

Presently, the school is headed by Alhaji Naziru Nagoggo and has a total of 124 academic staff.
